Virginia's new attorney general Jason Miyares (pictured left with new Gov. Youngkin and center being sworn in) announced investigations into the Virginia Parole Board and Loudoun County schools, the center of a sexual assault case that dominated the gubernatorial and attorney general's races. 'One of the reasons Virginians get so fed up with government is the lack of transparency - and that's a big issue here,' Miyares said in a statement. 'The Virginia Parole Board broke the law when they let out murders, rapists, and cop killers early on their sentences without notifying the victims. Loudoun Country Public Schools covered up a sexual assault on school grounds for political gain, leading to an additional assault of a young girl.' A 14-year-old boy, who identifies as non-binary, was arrested and found guilty of raping a girl in a school bathroom that allowed students to use the restroom of their gender identity. The student was transferred to another district where he allegedly raped another student and the district was accused of covering up the incident.

The devastated father of a UCLA grad student who was stabbed to death in broad daylight last week while working in a luxury LA furniture store is slamming politicians for ignoring the recent spike in violent crime. 'We have a lot of politicians that somehow forgot about people and think the key to getting elected is to support the lowest rung of our society and to give them rights and somehow that's the answer to getting votes,' Todd Kupfer (pictured left with his family) said. Kupfer's 24-year-old daughter, Brianna Kupfer, was murdered last Thursday when a male suspect, who is believed to be homeless, walked into Croft House around 1:50 p.m. and stabbed her to death. He then fled through the back door before calming walking down an alley. Police determined that it was a random attack and the suspect did not know the victim. The murder comes amid a huge crime surge in Los Angeles, with homicides in Los Angeles rising 52 per cent last year from 2019, and shooting incidents were up 59 per cent, according to LAPD data. Kupfer says he believes politicians are ignoring this recent spike in violent crime and wants to see change.

Jeffrey Cohen (top) was among four people held hostage on Saturday in a Texas synagogue by a British terrorist, Malik Faisal Akram, 44. All four hostages escaped after 10 hours, but Akram was killed on Saturday evening after the siege ended. Cohen credited the training he received in dealing with active shooter and hostage situations, noting how he called 911 and kept the line open, and positioned himself and the others near the door. Cohen said it was nothing like depicted in films. His account came as questions were being asked as to how Akram was granted a visa, and how he obtained a gun.

Malik Faisal Akram, 44, flew to New York City from the UK on January 22, despite being known to MI5. He had obtained a tourist visa and spent two weeks in Dallas before taking the hostages.

'It has to be a level playing field': Michael Phelps says controversy surrounding trans UPenn swimmer Lia Thomas is 'very complicated' and admits 'he does not know what's going to happen' with NCAA rules

Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps, 36, has reacted to the ongoing debate over trans college athlete Lia Thomas competing on women's swim team. 'It's very complicated. We all should feel comfortable with who we are in our own skin. But I think sports should be played on an even playing field,' he said. So far, the NCAA itself has not yet weighed in on the growing criticism over its transgender athlete policy. The NCAA's board of governors is now expected to review the policy later this week. Thomas, 22, sparked controversy after joining the women's swim team and shattering records. She broke two national women's records last month at the Zippy International in Akron, Ohio. Such was her dominance in the 1,650-yard freestyle that second placed swimmer Anna Kalandadze, a UPenn teammate, finished 38 seconds behind her.

Fauci warns that Omicron may NOT be the 'end' of the pandemic and there is a 'high probability' another variant could emerge

Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, warns that the Omicron variant may not spell the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Disease, told the Davos Agenda virtual event Monday that 'natural vaccination' - or immunity via previous infection - might not be as effective as some believe. Like the emergence of Omicron, there is potential for a new variant to emerge in the future that can bypass the natural immunity provided by infection from the new strain. He says that even if Omicron - which has caused a massive surge in new cases worldwide but is not as severe or deadly as its predecessors - is the final strain of Covid, it will likely become endemic. His warning runs counter to the positive predictions coming from some officials in the UK who believe that the virus could have a 'flu-type' relationship with people by the end of the year based on its current spread. 'I would hope that that's the case. But that would only be the case if we don't get another variant that eludes the immune response of the prior variant,' Fauci said. Fauci has previously made grim projections about new Covid variants, and was even correct about a variant like Omicron emerging. In August, when the Delta variant was first rising in the U.S., Fauci warned that with transmission of Covid so rampant it was likely that a vaccine resistant variant would eventually emerge. Months later, than variant did come about, when South African health officials discovered the highly infectious Omicron variant in late November. He fears that there is a chance another variant emerges that has mutated in a way that allows it to get around protection provided by recovering from Omicron.

MCCAIN: Over and over again on the campaign trail, Biden spoke and pleaded with the American people in an effort to convey that he alone was the antidote to the divisive chaos of the Trump years. He promised to be a president for all Americans and to usher us out of what was one of the most divided times in American history. We all know he hasn't done that. The promise of a united, bipartisan Biden-era has been revealed as a con and a lie. If you disagree with him or his policies, you are no better than racist segregationists. No great president in history has ever inspired his nation by accusing them of being comparable to the worst kind of figures in American history if you disagree with them. The cynical part of me knows deep down he is just doing this to placate his base, but you cannot win elections or hearts and minds by simply playing to one audience.

Treasury Sec. Janet Yellen said that the U.S. economy has 'never worked fairly' for black Americans in remarks on Martin Luther King Day.

Huddled together with her family in a secret annexe, its entrance hidden behind a bookcase in an Amsterdam warehouse, 15-year-old Anne Frank confided to her diary her anxious hopes for final liberation - for future life. 'Will this year, 1944, bring us victory? We don't know yet,' she wrote after hearing the BBC announce the D-Day landings on their wireless set. 'But where there's hope, there's life. It fills us with fresh courage and makes us strong again.' But it wasn't to be. Tragically, 1944 brought only capture and, a year later, death for the young Anne. While the Netherlands' liberation by Allied forces began just the following month, on August 4 the Franks - along with four other Jewish people - were discovered after having successfully hidden from the Gestapo for two years.

Distress signals are detected from outlying islands of tsunami-hit Tonga and widespread damage is reported, but the true death toll still unknown: Before-and-after satellite pictures reveal scale of devastation

The Pacific island nation of Tonga was devastated by a huge eruption of the underwater Hunga-Tonga volcano late Saturday, which sent a huge plume of ash into the atmosphere and triggered a tsunami. The blast severed the island's internet cables meaning news has been sparse, so the number of people killed and injured in the disaster is still a mystery. But the first satellite images taken of the worst-hit islands shows conditions being faced by survivors. One shows how the peak of the Hunga-Tonga volcano was obliterated in the blast (top left), while another (bottom left) shows how the Tongan capital Nuku'alofa inundated with water and ash. Two more images of the same island (bottom centre and right) also show the extent of the ash-fall, appearing to have been taken in black and white when in fact they are colour images.

Angela Glover, 50 and originally from Brighton before moving to Tonga with husband James in 2015, has been found dead after a tsunami hit the island late Saturday, her brother has said.

The white stuff was also falling fast in Buffalo, New York, dumping 16 inches by 8 am. as coastal cities were drenched by rainstorms. More than 150,000 households were without power Monday due to the ongoing storm.

A woman who crashed through the ice while driving on a frozen river in the outskirts of Ottawa found time to snap some selfies as nearby residents dragged over a kayak to rescue her from the roof of her sinking car. The unidentified woman stood on the roof of her yellow sedan as it sank under the ice of the Rideau River in the suburb of Manotick on Sunday afternoon. She was pictured taking photos of herself on top of the vehicle as it sank further down, with only the roof of the car peering over the cold water by the time she was rescued. In videos posted on social media, two people are seen hauling a blue kayak toward the scene of the accident. The woman gets on top of it and pulled out of the river by a rope tied to the watercraft. Footage, filmed by a passenger in the car behind the stricken Ford, shows the angry tusked mammal barreling into the vehicle in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in South Africa. There was nothing the car behind could do except sound the horn to try and distract the bull elephant but he was in no mood to stop until he had wrecked his target. Once he had used his tusks, trunks and his 6000kg of weight to roll the car he swivelled it on its sun roof. Satisfied the job was done, the elephant strolled off calmly. A mother and father with their two children aged eight and 10 cowered inside until game rangers who had been summoned by the following car arrived at the scene. A rescuer said: 'They were absolutely terrified and extremely traumatised by what happened and were in fear that the elephant would return and attack them again.'

ZEVA Aero completed four flights, totalling more than four minutes of controlled hovering, simulated taxiing manoeuvres at slow speeds and limited vertical climb manoeuvres. The 'personal flying machine' can transition from an upright 'hover mode' to 'forward flight mode' where the passenger faces downwards as they zoom through the air in a 'Superman-like trajectory' (illustration bottom right).

Brenna Huckaby, 25, earned two gold medals in PyeongChang, for snowboard cross and banked slalom, and she was training to defend her titles in Beijing. But the Paralympics axed her events, in her disability class, because there weren't enough participants. At first, she was told she could compete in a lower-disability class, which would put her at a disadvantage. She trained and qualified, 'proving I was more than capable despite my disability.' Yet now the rules say she can't compete that way, either, so Huckaby has 'fought with petitions, submissions & legal action' and is now using social media. Other athletes in similar positions are also fighting to be included.

'Aw this is pitiful!' TikTokers gleefully mock clip of Georgia residents trying to sled down a muddy hill following rare (and VERY light) snowfall that saw barely anything stick

Actress Brec Bassinger, 22, captured video of dozens of people on a hill in a park in Georgia. Several of the children are attempting to sled down the hill without much luck. Though Georgia was hit by a rare snowstorm on Sunday - with up to 10 inches at high elevations - in some places, not much actually stuck. Videos shows children trying to scoot down a hill mostly covered in brown grass with a few sparse patches of snow.
